LEED, which is an acronym for “Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design” is an international rating system used to measure the sustainability of a building or construction project.
Available for virtually all building types, LEED provides a detailed framework for healthy, highly efficient, and cost-saving green buildings.
The framework typically outlines 8 categories that are used to score a building site via a points system. The more points the building site accumulates on their scorecard, the higher the LEED rating.
The categories on the LEED Scorecard are as follows:
1. Location and Transportation
2. Sustainable Sites
3. Water Efficiency
4. Energy and Atmosphere
5. Materials and Resources
6. Indoor Environmental Quality
7. Innovation
8. Regional Priority
There are four levels of certification that can be earned depending on the number of points a site accumulates on their scorecard:
- Certified (40–49 points)
- Silver (50–59 points)
- Gold (60–79 points)
- Platinum (80+ points)
