Green Roofs/Living Buildings

Let’s face it, rooftops are a waste of space; and, across the world there are a lot of them.

Not only are they wasted space but the concrete, shingles, and other roofing materials all contribute to the Urban Heat Island Effect.

Green Roof and “Living Buildings” could change that.

Green Roofs improve air quality, capture CO2, cool the surrounding temperature, reduce heating and cooling costs, lower fire risk, reduce noise pollution, moderate storm-water runoff, and are more aesthetically pleasing.

In addition, they can be used to grow crops and produce to provide a source of locally grown food.

While commercial buildings are an obvious place to start, many suburban homes can have a green roof installed for as little as $10 - $25 a square foot.
